Here's my problem...I am basicly the care taker of my dad's 2000 vette and the reverse lights have gone out or just aren't working. Over the winter he refused to listen to me:hb and start it, or take the battery out, or put it on a trickle charger so the battery died and he had to get a new one. after the winter and now that he is driving it the reverse lights dont work.

is there a rest or something that I can do to check the lights and/or relay/fuse? Would this be covered under warrenty?

thanks

Hi there,
If you have a six speed, you may have lost your switch contacts within the transmission.
If you turn your approach lights on, and hit the unlock button on your key transmitter, do the lights light?????
If so, you just need a new switch, which could be covered under your warrranty, depending on mileage and in service date.

thanks for the help but 2 things: 1 what are approach lights(yellow running lights or an option in a menu)
2 what if they dont come on?

thanks c4c5

well according to my dad it was dark enough so when he unlocked the car the reverse lights came on...most likely bad news.

So what do we do now? is there aything we can check before taking it into the dealer?

any help would be greatly appreciated. c4c5 you are needed!!!:BOW

Hi there,
Nope, not really bad news, simply the switch, located on the side of the case.
if you are 6 speed, the switch is about $25, and takes about 1/2 hour to install.
If you are automatic, $150 for the switch, and about 1.0 hour.
Which trans do you have?????
What is your mileage, and what is the date the car was purchased brand new????
Allthebest, c4c5:hb

its a 6spd with 19,600 miles
the warrenty was extend as the origional warrenty has expired. the extended warrenty has a deductable of 100 but the probelm will need to be fixed for inspection.

the car is a 2000 purchased used about 1 year ago

is it possible to do myself?? what are labor rates these days?

Hi there,
This is the location of the switch, on the passenger side.
If you jack up the car at the rear, and support it with jack stands, you will see this picture.
You will need a 3/4 or 7/8, depending on date of manufacture.
Its not very hard at all.

will transmission fluid come out??
can I buy just a switch?

is it possible w/o jack stands?

and I assume by 34 or 7/8 you mean sockets? cause I have those.

thanks soo much for your help c4c5;worship ;worship :BOW

Hi there,
No fluid will come out. You really need jack stands to correctly and SAFELY support the vehicle.
Yes, you can purchase only the switch.
Simply ask for a reverse light switch.

I went out to look if I could see what I would do if I was allowed to replace it and you are right there is no way I coud get my big head under there to see what my hands were doing.(we dont have jacks or any of that stuff):cry

I guess we'll just have it done when the oil is changed (very soon)

thanks alot for all your help.

C4C5 i need your help, the local dealership said that the probelm was the switch (i could have told them that) and that to fix it it would cost 350 to fix the switch.

now I me young but to me that is the biggest bunch of BS ever.

I need some advice on what to do. please help

HI there,
Take the car elsewhere.
And ask them to itemize the estimate, to show what you are paying for.
I do NOT feel they are being truthful, or fair.
