Reverse lock out

My '78 has an automatic. The shift lever has a wooden knob that moves up and down. I assume it is supposed to be a reverse lockout. If it is... it doesn't. When I took it to the drag strip, I was trying to manually shift it and almost threw it into reverse at over 50 mph! Not a good thing.

I am awaiting an assembly manual for the thing. I am hoping it shows what is supposed to there.

In the meantine, I am correct about it's function? Can't find it mentioned in the owner's manual.

The shift lever is supposed to stop in neutral if the knob on the top is not pressed down. You will find the mechanism under the console.
