when heated up my 86 (man trans - doug nash 4+3) has a problem in reverse, if I lock the wheels (turn right hard) there is a noticeable whirring sound and sounds if something is slipping. I tried to back up a hill and the car would not move in gear. In forward gears the clutch feels solid with no signs of slippage.
Any Ideas what it could be?
Thanks,
Tom

If your car is slipping in reverse but not forward it would be the direct clutches in the overdrive unit. The overdrive unit has a sprag gear in it(which is a type of one way clutch) which will alow torque in the forward direction through the unit which helps with shift feel when the unit goes from O/D to direct but again it's a one way type of clutch when in O/D it over runs but in reverse it will just slip for reverse it is dependent on the direct clutches holding so if it slipps in reverse but not forward it's the direct clutches that are not holding.

Thanks for the reply David, so it appears I am looking at a rebuild on the OD unit?
My friend who owns a local xmission shop doesnt want anything to do with my xmission!

I'm sure if you were to check your fluid you would find it burn't. Let me know if you are having problems finding someone to fix your O/D unit If you get it removed and ship it to me I can build it for you tha's not a problem but I'm afraid that is what you are going to need.
