Rich vs lean

Another stupid question from me. I know that a car running rich will smell like gas, but what about one that is running lean? When I start my '86 up I get a gas smell and sometimes I'll get a smell that is hard to drescribe {it is kind of a stinging to the nose smell and it's not oil} Now that I have my '82 crossfire running right I'm trying to get my '86 there too. Any ideas?

I would guess it just more rich. A car running very rich will have almost a burning smell, if you stand behing the car at idle does it make your eyes burn and you can almost taste gas? If so you are way too rich.

Well, when it smokes at startup I can smell gas, but the "burning to the nose" smell only happens when I don't get smoke at startup. The only thing I can think of that might cause a rich condition would be the vapor canister. I find gas in the purge valve everytime I check it and it is a new one. Still can't figure that one out.{new canister too} I am going to try and figure out how I can get the wire insulation {I have wire shrink} to the fuel pump relay and MAF burnoff relay fixed. Maybe that will help some. With the keys out of the ignition you can wiggle the hot wire to the fuel pump relay and the pump will go on and off!
