So, yesterday I took a customer out for a test ride in a 500-mile 2006 ZO6. I was driving as this woman had never driven a Corvette, much less a ZO6. We're on the highway, and I had just said to her that we'd go down one more exit, then stop and she could drive back to our store. All of a sudden, we both hear what can only be described as an "explosion"!! I immediately thought it was something mechanical in the ZO6 and expected the car to go out of control. That didn't happen, but I immediately got off the highway and went back to the shop.

Imagine our shock when we got out of the car and discovered that the top of the ZO6 was gone!! :eek I had thought that the explosion we heard might have been the loosening of the top but never thought it would have flown off!!!!

The ZO6 will have a new top installed on Monday so all is well. And get this...the woman still bought the car!! :D

P.S. We never knew what happened to the top. Our mechanic took a ride up and down the highway and couldn't find it. Hope no one was hurt!

????
I'm confused.

All Z06's are Fixed Roof Coupes.
How does the top come off of a coupe?

:confused

:confused confusing, I would imagine you would know when the roof over your head blows off. To discover it after getting out of the car is ???:confused

Nice Liability!

We'd better hope that this doesn't happen when there's someone on a bike, ridin' behind the Vette driver. Highway beheading is just not the way to go!!!

I understand there's a recall, or at least a high-priority TSB for the roof problem. They'd better get all of them fixed now or GM will NEVER get out of bankruptcy!:mad

The ZO6 is not built like a coupe. The coupe has a removable single top that can be removed at will. The ZO6 does not. However, it does have a body-colored panel that goes on the top of the roof. It cannot be removed at will.

The recall is for both coupes and ZO6's. The adhesive used is defective and can literally "melt" so the roof can loosen and come off. That is what happened to the ZO6 I was driving. Not only did it loosen up, it literally flew off the car, and I have no idea where it went.

You would not know the roof came off as the inside headliner and the rest of whatever constitutes the roof on these ZO6's remain in place. So, from my perspective inside the car, everything looked normal. It was only when I got out that I could see that the top panel was no longer there.

You're so right, Mike. GM should have caught this before these cars even came off the line. It could easily kill or seriously hurt someone!

Is there any way we can track the latest on a complete fix for the Z-06/ZR-1 community? Some site, reference, source? Crucial infm'n, I'd say :W

Check with your dealership. I bought my '06 with 17K miles on it with a GMPP warranty. Stopped by dealership to get oil change and began chatting with service mgr. about roof rubber above psgr door and rear end clicking in reverse. He looked up the history and roof panel recall had been fulfilled in '07 but was coming loose again. He ordered new panel and when I went in to get it installed, ANOTHER recall had been issued (4/13/09). Turns out the recall implementation on the first go round stripped out the body threads so new nutcerts had to be ordered also. Two weeks to finish it up but, now I have new clutches in rear and new roof panel...car is tight and smooth!:w
