Round holes in callaway hoods question

I know certain callaways had those round holes in the hood. Such as the black L-98 with the mini ram, and the red and blue TT LT5's to let the air pass through the intercoolers.

does anyone have any info on why callaway went with round holes vs other shapes?

basically, does the round hole offer any type of aerodynamic advantage?

Bill, in a short answer yes, from what I understand. The way the intercooler entrance/exits were made allowed air to flow unobstructed into the front of the car and out, entering the rest of the air flowing over the car....causing no lift or differential in airflow over the car.

Plus a front mount intercooler is always more efficient.

I agree w/ what Surf has said and will add, I am certain the shape chosen was it is pleasing to the eye versus a rectangle, etc...
It seems to flow nicely :upthumbs

Also worthy to note...one of the articles I read on the #10 car stated that the area displaced by the round exit holes was equal to the entrance side....so the shape changed but not the volume.

I would think you would want a curved shape no matter what. Corners would probably cause turbulence and whistling. I imagine they could be an oval shape and work just as well, but aren't those front mounted intercoolers square? A circle would be the shape that closest fits it, then. An oval would fit a rectangular intercooler better.

I actually thought you were talking about the roundish holes in the hood of the normal (i.e. non-front-mounted intercooler) B2K's. Like they had on the later ones, around '89 or 90 or so.

The only car I can think of right now with a similar setup is the Shelby Series 1. There is an optional supercharger, but I've no idea if it is intercooled or if the ic sits in front. But the radiator sits at about a 45-degree angle, and air comes up from the front and out the middle of the hood. It isn't circles, but it is curved. There aren't any corners:

Thanks guys.

I am about ready to start my long process of building my 90. I have been thinking about what I wanted to do on my car.
I finally got a daily driver so I can start building my 90, installing the callaway body kit and building a turbo engine.

I wanted to put the intercooler in front of the radiator and tilt them both forward, and have the air exit out of the hood. something like series 1 posted, or the C5R. I just dont know if it would be that pleasing to the eye with the body kit on it.

I also wanted to put in some vents like the sledgehammer had to vent off turbo heat since I planned on mounting the tubos in line with the valve covers. I think too many holes in the hood would be too much.

Any one have any ideas or opinions? I am open to them.

Bill actually the vents on the Sledge's hood were intercooler exits also, just a different location. Have you looked at www.twinturbovette.net ? That car has about the cleanest TT install on a C4 outside of the B2ks, IMHO. If youre gonna use the Aerobody, Id mimick the 89-010 car, but youd better have a master glasser working on that project.

You could always just sell me the Aerobody :D

Yes, I have been talking to jerry about his car for a long time now.
I am basically going to follow along with what he has done on placement. I think I wanna try some different ideas on the manifolds though. we'll see how that goes.
I have also looked over the Sledgehammer a lot.
I have the same article you do on the 89 010 car as well. Also grabbed all the pics posted here.

I have/maybe still have a video game trailer for a racing game that had a C4 in it. That C4 had some vents placed roughly in the same spot as the Holes in the 010 car, but they were more like 2 rows of slits (similar to the viper vents that are over the wheels). It gave a clean look to the car, but I dont know...

I plan on buying another hood to mod, just incase this turns into a disater.

How did I know you were going to mention you wanted the body kit? :D :L
