What have members found to be the best product to clean and preserve the rubber gaskets which my 01 coupe seems to have an endless amount of? I usually put my hardtop on and off two to three times a day as I go home for lunch and drive the car to work.

Hey,

GM recommends uising a silicon based grease, aids in keeping the rubber flexible and fe4nds off leaks due to cracking and shrinking.

I have been using the GM approved Silicone Grease. I purchased this from Mid America.

Thanks for the advice. I'll visit my GM dealer and see if they carry it!

Silicone grease works okay, but it is extremely messy. Try Gummi Pflege, available at BMW auto dealerships. It works very well and is silicone-free (which is a good thing, since silicone is a dust/dirt magnet).

A new product recently released by GM is "Synthetic Lubricant with Teflon" - GM part #12371287 (3 oz. tube). It has a useful range of -40 F to 400 F.

I have used this on my 1999 C5 coupe weatherstrips. It is not as greasy as the silicone dielectric grease also recommended, and seems to "soak in" very quickly. It is easy to apply with a cotton or terry cloth rag.

You may want to try this product - I really like it.

Hi Doom Driver -

I'll wade in and cast my vote - I have been using silicone grease for years - a little dab'll do 'ya, and it keeps the rubber looking like brand new -

I have never had a problem with it - just rub it on, let it sit a while and then wipe it off. I also have never experience excessive dust and dirt accumulation from using it.

I am sure there is probably some specialized lube out there - but it will likely deplete your wallet much faster than good old silicone grease....

Whatever you use, it is good to do this often overlooked maintenance job a couple times a year - I can tell right away when someone has neglected their rubber strips - the top and hatch creak and crackle when you ride in their cars.

You pays your money and takes your choices.

best regards -

Thanks Again for your excellent comments

Bought the GM stuff - a whole bottle for $4 Can and did all the cars and truck. This stuff is great.

Thanks again:)

no, my windshield, back window, and side panels don't need to be lubed up!:W
