Rubber In All Four Gears

I recently overheard someone bragging at a local Corvette show, that he routinely chirped the tires in all 4 gears (yeah, just like the Beach Boys' little deuce coupe). Well I'm not braggin now, but I just don't see it. The car in question is a 65 with 327/365, close ratio, 4.11 posi, original bicycle tires.

Maybe he does it on pretty slick blacktop, a good hot day, clutch in, and rap the brake pedal! :D

Guess it's possible, but I believe it would take a little effort. I'm going from what I remember about the 327 340 hp '63 vert with 4.11 gears that I owned several years ago.:)

I had a 70 GTO with a 455, all the bolt on stuff, ran high 12s. Had bias ply tires on it when i first bought it, would smoke 1st and 2nd, break the tires loose on 3rd and chirp 4th.

Technically thats rubber in all 4 gears. When those tires were replaced with good sticky radials there was no more breaking traction in 3rd and 4th.

I had a 65/396/425 HP that I purchased new in March of 1965 and it would chirp the tires in 4th. But it's unlikely that the 327/365 would do the same.

I own a 66 427/425 convertable,presently it has 411's with the timing retarded to run on sunoco 94 gas,it has no problem chirping all 4 gears and as a matter of fact it will tear the tires off the rims in any gear.( I have modern reproduction yellow line radials on it) I am not sure of the torque difference between the motors but with only a 60 hp difference I would think it is possible.

Presently I have a MSD ignition system in the car with a rev limiter in it.I have the chip set at 5300 rpm and when power shifting the car I just bounce it off the rev limiter.So allthought this is not the peak rpm range for the highest hp for the motor it may be the peek torque and why the car fry's the tires so easely.
 
My '65 has the 327/365 with a 4:11 rear.
First and second will take some rubber off the tires and if i remember I might have gotten to chirp a bit in 3rd once but not in 4th.

of course, most everybody on here knows all the various problems I've been having with my car so it's probably not up to it's full performance capability and I'm not pressing my luck with her this week to take a test run to try out a 4th gear chirp for you! LOL
Besides, I hate dropping the clutch to burn rubber thru the gears as I can't afford to replace clutches all the time and BABY is a 39yo car so she deserves better. The only few times I did it was when I first got her and I HAD to play around a little. Now I'm happy to just be able to enjoy a nice relaxing cruise in her while holding my breath praying that the next problem with her won't crop up anytime soon.
 
It's very likely with a street/strip clutch. Stock clutches slip, rather than break the tires loose to hear a chrip.
My '66 L-79, 4.11s, does this with ease , with 225/60's on 7" rims.

can you explain the differences in the clutches and why?
I didn't know there were different "types".

I do not know the poundage ratings of the different pressure plates ;or the disc compounds that are availible.. Talk to Centerforce, Hayes, Zoom and Ram; they all have upgrades for positive clutch engagement over stock replacement.
Everthing is a trade off. Stronger clutches require more pedal effort. How strong is your left leg when sitting at a stop light?
Most of these companys have about 3 levels of pedal effort.

No doubt in my mind, I had a 68' roadster. 327 4 gear,and it burn in 1st and 2nd , 3rd gear good chirp and 4th gear chirp....
 
Also there are double friction clutches available.....that generate a lot of grip....and you can let the pedal go at 3500 revs with ease....

....however you can do that easily with 20 year old tires...:D
 
My '65 corvette, mild sb400 that I built and installed, 3.36 gear, 8" wide 24" tall tires, "H" rated not too grippy, jobber new clutch, will give a verry noticable chirp into 4th without me trying too hard. Does it all the time. I've only had the car a year so I don't power shift yet 'cause I'm not sure of all the weak links but soon...

Best way to find a weekness is to exspose it at 6000 rpms.


Only kidding I have been all over my car And with the tire on it presently I would say the tires are the week spot and keep me from braking things .

Last year I had the bright idea to see how fast this car was.I had a set of borrowed slicks bolted on for a test and tune day and had spectacular driver for the car (week end bracket racer) anyways I think it was john z who posted pictures of a twisted half shalfs and the slicks came off and I returned them to the owner of them incase I got anymore bright ideas.
 
I've got a 65 vette 327/350 hp. New clutch installed last year. Modern day tires too. I can effortlessly get rubber in all four gears. My eighteen year old son was amazed when I demonstrated. Unfortunately, Now I can't let him drive the car since I set such a poor example.

3.55 rear end. Not sure about the clutch. It was installed by the previous owner at the time of sale. I may still have the receipt from the garage. I'll look for it. All I can tell you is that I can shift into any gear w/o abusing the car and still get rubber. My first car, a 67 chevelle ss 396 (thirty-six years ago), was far more powerful but the best I could do with it was turn the tires over in first, second and third. I had a 3.73 rear end in it. I'm sure weight was determining factor.

You Have GOT To Be Kidding

I not only "chirp" 4th, I can do it at about 40 MPH. At a full throttle powershift, 8,000 RPM's, 3rd to 4th, I break them loose. I have a Centerforce dual friction 11" clutch with a 4:11 posi and a close ratio Richmond Gear Super T10. Just to make a point in Auburn, I broke them loose for about 10 feet or more from a dead stop in 3rd. I find it hard to believe this thread is even here.
