hi all! first time out here with a question. i recently had calipers, pads, etc. done on all four corners of my '74 l-48. the car stops perfectly. my problem is when i come to a stop, and start to go,i get a noticeable rubbing/dragging/grinding noise from the rear wheels. particularly on turns. i suspect wheel bearings, but since this is my first vette,i thought i'd be smart and ask around. the e-brake is also non functional if that helps. noise seems to be louder on drivers side. hope someone has had this experience and can at least give me a clue! thanks!

Welcome to CAC!

Did the rubbing noise begin after the brake work was done?

The noise during the turns makes me wonder if the differential may be the cause. If you replace the differentail fluid with some fresh fluid, that may cure that noise. Be sure to use the GM fluid designed for Posi-Trac differentials.

Also, like you said, the e-brakes may be the cause as well. Was the rear discs removed when the brake job was done? If so, one of the springs, or other compononets of the e-brake may have come loose and be the cause of the noise.

Let us hear what you find out!

come to think of it,itwas making some noise back there, but not so loud. the work was done by a Chevy dealer, so i'll have to pay them a visit and find out how far they went. will keep you posted.i'ts killing me not to drive her,but i don't want to do any damage! thanks....Mark

I know that on my F-body you have to pay close attention to the caliper to rotor clearance. It can be tight. I'm not sure this would apply to vettes, but a c-clip retained axle will float just a little bit in and out & if the axle/rotor is very close to the caliper it can actually rub during a turn. On the F-bodies sometimes you must shim the caliper to get the proper clearance. Like I say, it may not pertain to vetts since they have the independent rear suspension. Have a good one.

Rubbing back there can also be caused by parking brake shoes that are out of adjustment or are just in need of some restoration. My 71 suffered from this whenever the rotors got too hot.

Do the rear wheels/rims get very hot after driving .

hello all. Well it looks like my problem is solved. I changed the diff fluid and checked the e-brake.(or whats left of it) I don't know how many loose parts it's supposed to have, but my guess is none. I'll be redoing that little gem on Monday. Hope to have her out on the road later that day. A huge thanks to all who replied to my questions. I hope I can help someone in the future. Mark

Good to hear that you were able to fix it!

Be sure to post pics of you Vette when you can. We would love to see your Vette.
