Run Flats - Are you still using them?

Ya know this is a really interesting subject. I've read so much about the 'runflat vs Non-runflats' that it surprises me that people will consider using a non runflat over the tire technology the Corvette was designed for. On another webste there was a discussion about having non-runflats and about buying a Mercedes Benz jack, a wrench for the lug nuts and a little electric air compressor and a emergency tire patch kit. I mean WHy would you go through all that jazz when it's 2:30 in the morning and you've got a flat on interstate 80 in pouring rain ?

.

Agreed.:thumb

I neglected to check that when I bought the Vette.

Fortunately, I never had a flat on either of my C4's, but I always wondered how I'd ever get the jack under a car that's normally 4" off the ground, but would be lower with a flat tire. I never looked at the jack, but I do know the car (my 84' anyway) had a narrow spare tucked in under the back. :confused

Like several others here, I had a sudden loss of tire pressure on the left front run-flat at 65 (ran over something that punched a 1 inch hole in the tire). I got the notice of loss of tire pressure but had no change in handling. I reduced speed and drove home 20 miles and then to the tire shop. In a regular tire, that could have easily resulted in loss of control and a crash. Since then, I gave up the idea of anything other than runflats. They are well worth the extra cash.

And by the way, if you use one of those tire inflation kits that puts a sealant into the tire, it will trash your tire pressure sensors, which will cost a lot to replace.

I hate to admit I just replaced my original runflats on my 01 (shows how often I drive it) with F1 All Seasons.

I've got a pair of the F1 all seasons on the front of my C5 and I love them! When I replace the rears this fall I'm going with a set of F1 all seasons there as well (currently running Kumho ASX all seasons on the back and I hate them!)

When I got my C5 in August 2004 it still had the original run flats on the back, but the previous owner put regular Eagle F1s on the front (in a larger size too, 275-40-17) In 2005 I replaced all four tires with Pirelli P Zero Nero all seasons and that was the last time I had run flats on the car. I've had a few slow leaks from time to time, but thanks to the TPMS I was able to get the leaks fixed long before the tires went totally flat. I also keep a small compressor in the car just in case. In my 23 years of driving I've only had one flat tire that wouldn't hold air and needed the spare tire to be used. So I'm not super worried about not having run flats on my C5. Chances are very slim I would get into trouble. I don't do super long road trips in the car, otherwise I would probably be more inclined to stick with the runflats. I didn't object to the handling of the runflats at all, for me it was more the fact that I could get non runflat tires for a much lower price, plus the fact that I need all season tires and there is way more selection in the non run flat category.

Run flats since 98. Currently Bridgestones on the Z06.

Beautiful wx here in Ga. Did a 6 hr. top down run south on I-85 to Auburn and back on the new F1's. O' my sunburned forehead. I look like the poster boy for viagra! :chuckle My first ride on non-runflats. My vette has the handling package so it rides a little stiffer than those without. World of difference. 85 south of the ATL is not a smooth ride. Zipping along at 80+ mph inches away from a concrete barrier was harrowing but the ride, even on rough pavement...SMOOTH. I never realized how stiff the runflats were until I experienced the car without 'em. I know I will hate myself if I have a sudden loss of pressure, but I think the smoother ride is worth the risk. :cool

1999 A4 Z51 Coupe. Bought the car with 64K 3 years ago with Firestone RF on the back and Michelin XGT RF on the front. At 80K one of the Firestones attracted a nail and a sidewall got cracked on the dismount. I ended up putting Kumho ASX's on the back. At 88K I replaced the front Michelins with the Kumho ASX's and now have 102K on the car. The backs will probably last another 5 to 7K. The fronts are wearing evenly and perfomance has been phenomenal. Great traction wet and dry. Great ride and low noise. Very little weight needed for initial balance (one of the back tires needed NO weight) and they have not needed a rebalance. Running 32 psi in the fronts and 33 psi out back. For the price it is an excellent tire.

I carry a 12 volt compressor, a plug kit and a AAA Plus card everywhere. I haven't needed any of them yet.

Non-runflat Goodyear GS-D3's on my C5.

A little clarification for those that think the Goodyear Run Flat is the ultimate tire for the C5. This is the "best" run-flat that the engineers were able to put on the car. There was a requirement for four run-flat tires on the car so that they could meet the requirement to not put a spare tire and jack in the car. This was done to keep the weight down on the car. The reinforced sidewall on the run flat doesn't help the handling of the car at the limit. For most of the driving that's done by most of the members here the run-flat performance is good enough.

OEM C5 Goodyear Runflat's Suck Big Time! :cool

I don't disagree although the 2003/4 MagRide cars really did work well with them. However, even I changed those OEM Goodyear tires for Michelin PS AS ZP tires for the better and quieter ride.

That being said, the Goodyear runflats on the C6 are a generation better and show it. I like the F1 GS2 that comes on the C6 and I bought a second set for the '06 when the need came - okay, they were getting a little loud when the tread got down to 2/32" but almost all tires do that.

I did not experience any noise problems with my F1 SC runflats on my CTS-V as they wore out, my biggest complaint with the SuperCar tires is that they wore out toooooo fast. I'm now running F1 GS D3 runflats on the CTS-V with 25K miles and no complaints.
