Rusty Rotors on 03

At 20K miles, I had the squeaky break pads replaced with a better GM grade. The dealership turned the rotors during this install.

Now I am getting a bead of rust on the rotors where it was turned but the new pads do not touch.

The dealer is not sure what to do, they say they can repaint with a high-temp paint and clean up the rusty mess where the wheel is attached but with the amount of heat the breaks will make they feel the rust beads on the rotors will come back. They have a “just live with it” attitude, but I can be an A**hole when it comes my Corvette.

Any suggestions from my fellow CAC members that know what they are talking about?

Hi NC 50anny -

First off, I have to ask why they turned the rotors? GM does not recommend turning the rotors unless there is a deep gouging in the rotor - search for the TSB regarding the replacement of C5 brake pads.

If there is a gouge that is deep enough to rust and show up, you would probably be better off with a new rotor IMO - although they are not free, they are not that bad compared to seeing them looking ugly on your fine ride.

The final thing I would add, is that I use Amzoil MP (Metal Protectant) on the top-hat portions of the rotors to keep them looking factory fresh - just spray it on a rag, wipe it onto the rotors in the top hat area, then wipe the swept area with alcohol to remove any MP on the brake surface.

<edit - after I saw the picture in the original post> Your picture shows that the gouge you are talking about is not on the swept area - it is the step-down to the swept area from the top hat - Amzoil MP or the equivalent will fix you right up - be sure the wipe the swept area with brake cleaner or alcohol...

Thanks for the inspiration. I just removed all 4 wheels and cleaned the inside rims and repainted the rotors. I have never been happy with the look of the rotors, after market Vette Brake rotors. there a good stop but not good to look at. I used Hi Temp Black paint.

UPDATE:

Got the car back from the dealership yesterday, they painted the rotors. Looks good right now with no rust. I will drive it a few days and see how things hold-up with heat and friction, clean her up a little and then post a picture.
