hello, i was under my 65 just looking around and found sand from when it was sandblasted in the frame...i haven't put the rocker panels on yet, so if i have to get it out of there now would be the time...might that sand trap moisture and cause problems down the road?...anyone have any great ideas on how to get it out?...there aren't many access holes...i was thinking about trying to blow it out but that would probably just blow it around....anyone know any good ways to rustproof the inside of the frame rails with the body on?...thanks for any advice

Sand trapped in the frame will hold moisture and will eventually cause the frame rails to rot. My car was stripped down to the bare frame rails. I had some rust through spots on my 61 and when the areas were opened up for repair there were pockets of rust and sand in those areas. Before the repair was done I was able to stand the frame on end and tap with a large mallet to get all the bigger stuff out. Most of it came out through the larger rust holes. Next I got a length of small diameter soft copper tubing 4 or 5' long and duct taped it to the end of my shop vac hose to get into the frame rail holes and did my best to vacuum it out. Then I pressure washed it through the frame rail ends with the frame tipped front to back. Finally I ran a garden hose with a nozzle attached and washed it out till it was cleaned out. The frame rails have some metal "stops or obstructions" in them which makes it more difficult. My welder repaired the rails from the inside out filling and grinding until it came up to the outside level and made a virtually undetectable repair. He also checked for any other thin spots with a magnetic gauge. Allot of work, but the end results were worth it.

fredd65,

While my motor and trans is out of my '5, I plan on freshening up the engine compartment. I purchased a quart of POR15 and a quart of Metal Ready. The instructions mention using these products inside your frame rails by using a wire attached to a sponge. There are enough slots on the frame rails to enable you to do this. First I'd take compressed air and blow any debris, loose stuff out of the rails then tackle it with this product. Comes highly recommended. I've never used this product before, but everything I've read says it loves rust. Stops it cold.

Good luck!

Best paint I've ever used. Truly amazing and worth the money.
