1982 Collector edition
I have an '82 Colector edition and my engine light came on and the scan found code # 42. The GM manual says one of three reasons. "Electronic spark timing circuit- open or shorted to ground." "Direct ignition system fault- bypass circuit open or shorted to ground." or "Fuel cutoff relay circuit- open or shorted to ground." Anyone out there have any thoughts? Thanks in advance to all...

Usually its the HEI module in the distributor. Its the wires going in the passengerside of the distributor that connect to the module.

Are you having problems with the car? Typically when the HEI goes the car cuts out once in warms up. Runs again when it cools down.

The car runs well. Sometimes when I'm at cruising speed the car hesitates as if there is a miss in the motor. The engine light only comes on once in a while and quickly goes out. Just trying to think of the easy stuff before I take it to my local Corvette shop. I have a GREAT Vette shop near me but as you probably know, They ain't cheap. Thanks for the advice Jim.

Missing is also a symptom. Check the wires leading into the distributor first....passenger lower side. Mine were melted.

The module is relatively cheap...$40 I think. Changing it is about 15 minutes work. If you are going to do it don't forget the lythium grease. Goes between the module and the distributor. It disburses heat.
