Searching for a part

I'm looking for a part for my restoration project, not a Corvette, but it is a GM product. The A/C system for my `71 Cheyenne P/U requires an anti-dieseling relay, I've gotten a part number from a Chevy dealer, 6273301, a discontinued item. In my quest for this part I've talked with a guy who says that Corvettes may have used this same part, hense my post here. He also gave me another, older part number, 3996203. I was wondering if anyone here would have an old parts manual that might show crossover/alternate part numbers from another part manufacture. Something like AC Delco or Four Seasons.

Thanks in advance,

Sam

Sam,

The '71-'72 Corvette number was 3996204. Probably not much difference. In fact the 6273301 may have superceeded more than one part. I checked all of the big catalogs and found it only in Eckler's but it was marked discontinued.

Most all GM dealers are on the system now and your dealer should be able to search for that number in other dealer's inventories. If some dealer has one on the shelf the number will be in their inventory list whether it's discontinued or not. I have found many things over the years, big and small, doing this.

One other suggestion is to go to an AC Delco jobber. Look in the yellow pages under auto parts wholesale or auto electric services, ect. They often still have parts available that GM has dropped from their system.

You may have to search for a good used one. Look in the Portal at the top of this page for used parts sources.

Good luck,
Tom

BTW Do you hang out at 67-72 Chevy Trucks.com or any of the other truck sites? Just look for basketcase. I have a '69 short stepside project.

Found the part

Thanks Tom, I actually found the part. I saw a guy on eBay selling parts for classic Chevy trucks and emailed him about the part. He had some sort of locator software that listed three people/companies who showed the part in stock. I called all three, the first two didn't have it but the third had 4. He said he got his inventory from dealers who got rid of old stock on their shelfs. It cost me $50 for a part that probably only cost $12, but oh well. I will keep the other options you gave me in mind for my next part search. I'm sure their will be more too. Don't know why the Chevy dealer I got the part# from here didn't offer to check other dealer inventories, I'll have to be sure and request that next time.

As far as the classic Chevy truck forums, the guy with the locator software above has one, http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ , and through them I heard about http://67-72chevytrucks.com/ but don't get by much. I hear it's the biggest and best though. I'm registered on both as Sams_71. I also belong to a couple of others on Yahoo and http://www.chevyduty.com/ as well.

Oh yeah, mine is a 1971 Chevy Cheyenne and can be viewed below:

Great looking truck Sam. Glad you found the part. I go to Chevy Duty often and I need to send them an order for a couple pieces to finish my disc brake conversion.

Here's another one that's interesting. The Classic Truck Shop . The '67-'72 forums are not too active but there is a lot of good info and links here.
