I posted this in the Motorsports thread, but I wanted to drop this in here too.

I have a 1966 Corvette L-79 M20 3.70 and I race it at the Pure Stock Drags in Stanton Michigan.

The race is a 2 day event, with qualifying all day Friday, and a best of 3 shootout Saturday. I qualified at 14.05 and was matched up against a 14.09 car: that car was a 1965 Corvette 327 / 350 M20 3.70.

The kicker ? Both cars a maroon with white convertible tops...

Both of us were itching to get into the 13's and the weather could not have been better. The first race I ripped off a 14.001 to his monster 13.82. Lucky for me, I cut a much better light and got the win light.

Race two was my turn to nap, as he put a car on me at the get go and I had to try to chase him down, I never did catch him, but something went right as I ran a 13.84 to his 13.89 ..

Round 3 was anti-climatic as I cut a monster light and the other car went up in tire smoke trying to catch me. I get the shootout win, but hte only loser in the race was the poor track announcer trying to figure out which car was which...........

Whenever two sweet C2's are battling at the strip, we wanna hear about it here. :bang

Congratulations for using your old car for some of what it was intended.

must have been a great sight to see. But than i AM partial toward Milano Maroon since that's what my '65 coupe is
:)

Donny-
What tires are you using , and do you know the track altitude?

The reason I ask ; is , I hold the NCCC Group I B record at 13.48 ; which is the pure stock class. The 13.48 is the altitude adjusted to sea level.

I used 235/60 BFG DR's. We have to use the same size tire on all four corners and pass an engine tear down.
I would love for you to brake this record , so I could try and lower it.

Sounds like you were both having too much fun. Congrats on your win.

Hey SG, thanks for the kind words

I am running Radial T/A's 225/70's, per the rules you cannot run sticky tires, and you can only upgrade to to a 70 series if the car came with something smaller. I am pulling 2.15 60 foot times.

The Track is Mid Michigan Motorplex in Stanton MI, I do not see the track elevation on their website.

My car would pass a teardown, just a .030 over L-79 with the Speed Pro spec cam, Speed Pro pop up pistons, and a balance job. I got to believe a 13.60 pass is in there........

I will post a few pics of the racing as soon as I get a chance to photoshop them down to a dial up friendly size........

Hey Donny,

Just wanted to chime in here and tell you that that was great racing! Really enjoyed the event! Hey thanks again to you and Paul for helping me find my 3-4 rod!!

You've got one tough '6!! I do believe you're destined for some lower trap times and higher trap speeds.

Now, if only I can leave my sleeping bag in the pits!! Those 1 second reaction times have got to go!!

We sure gave the fans somethin' to talk about, eh!

Was on the other forum with a long thread that did mention you kindly!!

Regards,

Jim (6T5RUSH)

Ah.....So.. Does that mean that the new "67 Heaven " Rebirth Of A Legend will be making an appearence at a northen Drag Strip some time in the near future?
Pictures Please......

Or will she be a trailer queen??...........:L

Donny-
You may have already done this , change the needles and seats to a .120 size. My L-79 picked up 1-2 mph because it was too lean at high rpm. The small fuel line from the tank and the small seats starve the engine above 5500 rpm. These side hung floats do not recover well also ; so you really have to optimize the stock parts.....
My best 60 ft. was a 1.98 on the BFG DR's on that record setting day.

Hey JL,

There was 1966 Corvette 427/425 last year that ran a 12.78, and that Hurst SC Rambler and blue Ram Rod Olds are both piloted by their original owners........

You are NEVER too old.........

Hey Donny,

Paul did a GREAT job covering that event. EXCELLENT pics of those cars in action. Luv that burn out he caught on that red Vette!!

Regards,

Jim
