I'm a new owner & member (1st) 86 coupe. Due to the SES, I have replaced the tps and air mass sensors. At different times hot or cold the SES light comes on when the engine is started, and stays on. The next day it is off. Might go on the next restart or it will stay off. The code is indicating the mass air. The codes seem to clear themselves, without the scanner. Any ideas?
I had a similar issue and it turned out to be some off the insulation on the wires had shrunk back and was shorting out, they were right where the connector goes into the relay on the firewall (drivers side) turns out the MAF wires stayed on as well (Red Hot).
I own an 86 since 1992. The first time I saw the MAF S.E.S. code I changed the very expensive sensor, and watched the same code pop up a few days later.
An online inquiry lead me to purchase inexpensive relays. In fact I just changed the relay last week (third one in ten years). Kragen Auto Parts (California) has the relay for $9.99 compared to dealer at $18.00.
I find it hard to believe that the codes clear themselves. An intermittent SES light, to me would indicate an intermittent problem. Once the SES light comes on for any amount of time it is stored in memory. I would say that if the light is indicating the relays, then the problem isn't occuring all the time. Swap out both the MAF and burnoff relays (20 bucks) and an hour of time, and go from there.
Mart, never2nd, & vetteboy 86, Thanks for all the help. I replaced to 2 relays, and you should see this vette go. I never had so much power, speed and responsiveness till now.
