Service LTPWS Light

I just replaced the original tires on my 96 coupe. The left front sensor was damaged in the process thus causing the service ltpws light tocome on. I would like to clear this from the driver info center. The owners manual states, and I quote. "If you would like to clear the SERVICELTPWS light from your Driver Information Center permanently,see your dealer." I asked the service tech at my local dealer and he informed me it was not possible. Why does the manual imply that you can do this? I'm sure there are plenty of horror stories on this. Any help would be appreciated.

You can clear the code and the indicator yourself but it will come back on after two drive cycles. Make the dern tire store replace the wheel sensor. They broke it!

Are you planning on replacing the damaged sensor? If not I would remove the bullb from the DIC.

I do not plan on replacing the sensor. How do you interpret the wording in the owners manual I refered to?

The tire store was willing to do that but I didn't press it because I did not buy the tires from them. They just did the mounting and balancing.

I interpret it to mean the dealer will repair the problem and reset the code. I would still ask the tire store to replace the sensor if you had forewarned them it was there.

Mine's been staring at me for months. I keep meaning to disconnect the bulb but I just haven't gotten off my lazy butt to do it.

The dealer must have a way of turning off that feature (as in the manual). I'm sure Chevrolet foresaw the possibility of custom wheels, etc. How are those members here with custom wheels (without sensors) dealing with the problem?

I just found this post, and it's like re-living a nightmare for me!

I just had new Goodyear GS D3s mounted, and they broke the right-front sensor. I warned them repeatedly about the sensors, and the guy says "Yeah, I'll put my best guy on it". Sure enough, first wheel on the machine, he reaches in with that bar, grabs the strap that holds the sensor, and SNAP!

First they tried to fix the strap- no good. Then they tried to say it was broken already! Finally, three trips back to the store later, they fessed up, and bought a new sensor/strap assembly from the dealer. Then tried to install it backwards!!

I'm shopping for a new tire store....

This problem of destroyed wheel sensors must be all too common. I participated in a thread about this a few weeks ago. Tire store had to replace the sensor twice because first replacement did not work. (they broke the original)
I finally won a factory owner's manual on eBay, so I can read up even more about this. I do wonder what the dealer's are supposed to do if you get new wheels or remove the sensors? Just remove the bulb?
I bet if we did a poll we would find hundreds of owners who have had sensors broken by tire stores.....even after they were advised to be careful!
