Just replaced the interior. Now the shift lever hits the side of the console when tring to put the car in reverse! This is a 1977 and the reverse is toward the driver than up. It is so bad i can not even get the car in reverse.. I have a Hurst shifter .. I do not know if it is orig. or aftermarket.. When I brough the car the interior was trash so I do not know if it was hitting the console before i redid the interior.
Please help?? Is ther an adjustment for the side to side movement??

I don't recall any side to side adjustment for the Hurst when I had one.. However.. the mounting bolts may have come loose allowing the shifter to move further to the left than is intended.. If you continue to force it to the left it will eventually break the edge of the shifter plate.. I know all about that. These shifters were pretty tough and about the only thing that wears is the ends of the rods, which may affect the front to rear motion and gear engagement. .. check for loose mounting bolts.. some are easier to get to from the top with shifter plate off (depends on boots and hole size in tunnel),and others can be accessed from underneath.

Curtis.. Thanks!!. I checked all the bolts and nothing is loose. I did get a reply from another site and they are saying that the trans mount may be worn and needs to be replaced. This in turn will raise the trans and allow more side movement. I did check the mount and it is destroyed I am going to replace and go from there.. Thanks again for the reply.

What shifter handle are you using?I swapped the Hurst handle for the stock appearing handle and it does hit the console a little when i put it in reverse. Is there a way you can turn the handle around or fabricate a spacer to move the handle a little to the right?

SHARKCAR71.... You where right on the money.. Thanks!!!!! I used a few spacers and moved the handle to the right and it works just fine. Such an easy fix.. Wish I knew more about the way these things work..
Thanks again..
