shifter/trans noise

I get a bad chatter from the shifter area at high rpms (during shift) and also while constant driving it is annoying as hell. Any ideas what this could be ? Not sure if it is the shifter itself, or the trans.

Whne I hold the shifter, it helps a little, but it is still present.

I have a 64 365hp convertible. It was just completely redone.

Prior to 1968 all Corvette shifters were bolted directly to the transmission. Any and all powertrain vibration was transmitted to the shifter. Some vibration will be normal, however, you say "It was just completely redone". If that means the engine was overhauled, perhaps the engine now has a balance problem. If that's the case, you need to address that, but....even if there is no balance problem, normal vibration may be causing the noise.

With a car that is 42 years old, the shifter parts are probably quite worn and "loose". When the parts get like that, even normal engine vibration causes those loose parts to rattle. That's the noise you hear.

Obviously, you're not going to find a new shifter. You can try "rebuilding" it, provided that the appropriate replacement parts are available.
 
Standard Muncie shifter rebuild kits are available from Volunteer Vette; I wrote a photo-illustrated feature article on how-to in the January '08 issue of "Corvette Enthusiast" magazine (800-448-3611 for back issues).

Corvette shifters were moved from the transmission tailhousing to a separate mount on the crossmember as a running change during 1966, and the mounting bracket and hardware to make the same conversion is available from all the usual vendors.

Thank you - it would make sense to decouple the shifter from the trans. I see the bracket on ecklers, paragon, etc.... Do you know if this will bolt up to the existing shifter as is, and what about the crossmember ?

This conversion was done on many '64-66's by the dealers under a TSB; all you'll need to do is to drill two holes in the rear vertical face of the crossmember for the two self-tapping rear bracket attaching screws. Your existing shifter will bolt directly to the new bracket instead of to the adapter plate that's currently bolted to the bosses on the tailhousing. :)

"John Z" posted the correct information. My earlier post saying the move from a tail housing mounted shifter to a frame mounted shifter occurred for MY68 is wrong.

But, regardless of when the change occurred, moving the shifter from the trans to the chassis reduced noise and vibration.
