The shifter won't go into first gear no matter how hard I pull. It is an 87 Coupe with the 700R4 auto tranny. Is it supposed to be like this or is something wrong? Is it easy to fix or does it have to be taken to a transmission shop? Thank you. :confused

Honestly, I don't think I have ever had a reason to put mine in low. If I want a quick hop I leave it in 2nd and let the super-short 1st gear do it's thing...

Mine won't either, but I haven't took it apart to investigate. If I remember correctly, the 85 Z28's I owned had to have a tab cut off under the console. That might be the case for the Vette as well.

I've never driving an auto vette, but isn't there a button that you have to push on the shifter to get it into a low gear?

I have, ya gotta pull it with real intent! Check the linkage and cable. My tranny is newly rebuilt and it's still a serious effort.
