I have an automatic transmission 99 vette. I have read elsewhere that moving the shift lever from drive to 3rd then 2nd as a technique to slow down (save brakes) is bad for the transmission. Does anyone have any insight on this? Thanks.

I can't say either way. But, one thing I do know is that brake pads are significantly cheaper than a new tranny.

Down Shifting

My only thought is that it generates more heat and uses up some of the friction material in the trany, both of which will shorten it's life. Granted this may be small, but like all wear it is cumulative. I can change brake pads, but I can't rebuild an auto trans.

In racing situations or just spirited driving where you are setting up for a corner it would certainly be appropriate, but not in daily driving.

Sounds like you need to move to a manual shift or wait for the new paddle shift.

What is the "new" paddle shift? Is this like Chrysler where you can change the automatic to manual mode and shift yourself?

No doubt regarding the brake pads vs the tranny. I like hitting the corners hard and fast and the auto just will not down shift for you. No better feeling (except for one ;)) than hitting the throttle at the apex of a turn and whipping the steering back to neutral. Car comes around like it is on rails, and if you screw up (like I often do) then traction control will save my arse. You're right, I need a manual Z06. Until then, I must improvise. Anyone know for sure if this will damage my transmission?

I drove my 98 automatic coupe as you describe. After 2 years of this it started making some very different noises and shifting seemed to be changing as well. Nothing but 6 speeds for me from now on.

Several responses have mentioned that it is time for a stick, however a clutch is also more expensive than brakes to replace!! :duh

my new flp stg 4 trans, cooler and yank ss3200 is costing me about $4200, all installed.

i think i'll use the brakes.

Wow. So this new paddle shift on the C6 lets you shift without taking your hands off the steering wheel.

Paddleshifts are very popular in Europe. I don't know why cars here don't have them
