Side exchaust on a midyear

Larry, your car is a St. Louis-built body - no problem; from your description, I think you can be pretty confident it's an original sidepipe car. Only sidepipe cars got the notches in the sill and sill reinforcement - that operation was done before the birdcage assembly was welded together. The body cuts at the front and rear weren't done with "precision" - they will vary somewhat from car to car.

OK this is a side shot showing the cuts/trim job for the clips

Larry,

rockers look right, I would say your car was a factory side exhaust car. slices in fiberglass are consistant with what I have seen on other orig side pipe cars.

The rectangular notches in the sill are the tipoff to a real sidepipe car; we made those with a hydraulic "nipper" tool in the sill subassembly fixture, and you'll NEVER see notches that clean and precise in a converted car.

BTW, A.O. Smith made '67 sidepipe cars too; they just didn't make BB cars of any sort after about the end of September, 1966. They couldn't match the St. Louis masking technique for the hood stinger, so after September they only made small-block bodies (including sidepipe cars).

Does anybody have some picture they can share with me?
OF

A non correct trim job of the fiberglass for the side exhaust

The bent over or trimmed off tangs for the wide style rocker moldings

A picture of improperley trimmed bird cage where the clips are

A picture of a car with under-car exhaust with the radio grounds straps attached in there proper locations

Since I have owned my car I have been compiling a restoration book on it.I have just taken all of the information that was sharred with me and have created a short document with all that information in it on how to determin a original side exhaust car and I am adding pictures to it.I will share it with every one onces its complete.
