Slinging fan belts

I just got a 97 vette that seems to have a problem slinging fan belts, I replaced the old one, but the problem still persists. I have also noticed that the sound mat under the hood was damaged in the past in the areas adjacent to the alternator and tensioner pulleys. Is there any long standing problems in this area for C5 vettes. The tensioner seems extremely stiff and not very responsive, so I have ordered a replacement, hoping this is the problem. Seems to be a comman problem, my mirrors where loose also when I got it (even though someone had super glued them) I looked at the replacement cost of about a thousand dollars and came to the same conclusion as you. I found that an 18 mm nut was the right size for the shaft and used it as a "die" to thread it on. Works great, thanks for your response.
