My 92 has a sloppy tilt steering wheel, I think from getting in and out by leaning on the wheel? the tilt still works but is sloppy in all positions. Am I at danger driving it like this? or is it just an inconvienance, I would have no idea how to take an air bag wheel apart, and I am sure labor would kill me if I was to bring it it to a dealer, any suggestions? I thaught I saw a thread awhile back but wasnt sure if it would also be the same for a 1992 with air bags?

my tilt fix was about a grand :eek

The pivot point in the column was replaced for that reason - the prev. owner "heaved" himself out of the car using the wheel as leverage :eyerole

The prob. is, the pin sits in holes that become oblonged :(

was the $1000 repair on the 1993 or on one of the 1989? I think the steering columns are different between the two?

The hinge that holds the tilt mech. together is just pot metal and if it has a lot of movement it means that it is about to break at that point... Look on eBay for a replacement steering column for about $75.00.. the biggest part will be installing the arts that will correct the problem

Well I had the whole thing apart this week! my pivot pins were fine and the four screws that are found deep in the column were somewhat loose and I applied lock tite and tightened them down. The slop in the wheel is still there? I think it may be in the tilt it self? I can't find any worn parts and have yet to find a used column! any help would be appreciated

does anyone know what years and what other model replacement steeering columns will work in my 1992, I am not sure if all the c4 columns are the same or not or if a camaro or trans am would be the same, mine does have an air bag and tilt, cruise

any help would be appreciated

Sloppy Tilt

I need the same information. My column is a bit sloppy but I can turn just fine and just don't want to be turning one day and have the column fall into my lap. I have a '93 Coupe

I just got finished replacing my upper steering column. Got the entire column from a salvage yard and it took about 5 hours to complete the swap out. It's a medium difficulty type job but can be done by anyone with a smidgon of mechanical ability. My 87 doesn't have the airbag so it was cheaper (probably) than a newer one. My cost = $350.

If you get a replacement column, make sure you can send it back if it also has the wobble. Also, you'll need to find out your VATS code so you can get new VATS keys made for the replacement column or you can disable the VATS with a resistor. Don't spend money on keys until you're sure the column you get is ok.

When you're taking the old one out, pay attention to where things go and it's fairly easy to get it back together.

BTW, I'm told that grabbing on the wheel to exit the car doesn't do as much damage as allowing the wheel to slam to the up position when releasing it with the lever. If you can avoid that, your column probably will last much longer and stay tighter.

Had that problem with a truck. Had a "rack kit" installed. Fixed right up. About $50 as I remember it.

Found the two parts needed to fix the problem at Art's Corvette parts.com the housing is $195 and the support is $88. the price sounds a little steep to me! expecially if I can find a whole used column for $350. I have two junk yards looking for me right now! no luck yet though. anyone else have parts to sell let me know!

Well I pulled the whole column out last night, wasn't hard at all! just alot of wires but they all just unplug, I found a guy down in Milwaukee who has just about rebuilt 10,000 columns himself over his 20 years dealing with stolen or repoed vehicles, he was even so kind to pick mine up from me on his way up to northern wi for the weekend! He said that he could rebuild it for $350 or less, and everywhere else I looked was at least $450 for a rebuild, well I havent got it back yet but I will keep everyone posted on how it all goes. wish me luck putting it all back together!
