86' 4+3 overdrive unit finally gave it up last night. pulled off the pan today and the fluid was all black and burnt.

So i want to put on a 6 speed. will a 6 speed from a C5 fit on my car without much problem? And will the bell housing and clutch all fit on right? also would i be able to hook up the trani to my shifter, or would i need all the linkages and shifter from the C5?

dan

Dan, the C5 has the transmission in the rear; it's a transaxle for lack of a better term. ;)

the Richmond 6 speed may be a better choice - I understand the ZF6 speed will require some modifications to the floorpan :eek

Anyone try a T56 out of an F Body??

haha

Oh man. I always thought of myself as someone who was pretty on top of things when it comes to vettes. HAHA the C5 is a transaxle. I did not even know that. WOW someone slap me!!!!

Hmmmm ZF6 requires floorpan alter. I really want to get rid of this 4+3

the ZF6 is different from the richmond right?

..

hey thanx, i'll def check out them sites. i just emailed corvette junkyard, and asked what the price for an overdrive unit was. $1,195 what a rip man!!!!! NO way!!!! not when i can get a good used 6 speed for 1,000-1,500

I also asked the guy what all was involved in switching to a 6 speed. He didn't say, he just said that it was a difficult swap. I don't see how it would really be that bad. I'm gunna pull the whole motor and all. As long as the driveshaft does not need to be altered, it should slide right in.

That And More

You may have to change other items as well, crossmember, length of the driveshaft, yoke, spline for the clutch, shifter and linkage. Not to say it can't be done, but if you're worried about changing the driveshaft, think about talking to someone in here that knows for sure.

can't use a LS1 FBody 6 speed. bellhousing is way different.

it shouldn't be too much of a difference in piecing in a richmond 6 speed unit as long at the shifter lines up with the pre existing hole. anything can be done. but like Rowdy1 said you'll most likely need a crossmember (a tranny shop can make you a custom one) most likely the driveshaft won't fit. it will cost alot of money but can be done.

might be time for an automatic if money is a problem.

good luck :)

hmm

holy smokes, thats a big hole. maybe i'll just try another 4+3. What a bummer!!

all of the above replies will be relevant.

As I titled the answer, ALL of the above replies are relevant. You need to look at which transmission to look at for fitting in you baby.
The 6 speed ZF and Richmonds will require much alteration to the trans tunnel, and IF I remember correctly, you'll need to put in a new bell housing and while you're at it a new clutch isn't a bad idea.
The cross member and mount will in all likelihood need to be rebuilt due to the length of the tail piece and where it mounts, then you'll have to cobble up a new drive shaft if they were shorter, or have it shortened and re balanced if it is longer.
The Warner T-5 series that was used in the F-bodied cars may not stand up to the torque that the corvette makes, but may be an easier fit, but I also remember something about them being installed about 20 to 30 degrees out of the verticle, and needing a "special" bell housing to remedy this and if I remember correctly Advance Adapters used to make them, (I'm reaching back atleast 10 years now.)
It just struck me as I was sitting here, ZF used to make the 5 speed transmission for the 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks, from 88 on forward. They should be strong enough, but doubt they would go in easily, but you can take a look at it. I would consider shortening the shifter though.
In the long run, you may be better off rebuilding the 4+3.
An other idea is looking for an 80 to 87 T-10 which was built as an overdrive 4 speed for Mopar and GM truck products. External dimensions are fairly close, you only have 4 forward speeds, but the top one is 22 percent overdrive, great for the highway!
Keep us all informed how your hunt goes, and I'm rather certain we'll all input our own two cents.

My brother has an 86 with a good working 4+3 . It's outrageousely fun to drive . It feels like your driveing a car with 4.56 gears when your romping around and then when you get out on the highway it goes into overdrive and gets 27 mpg . Fix the 4+3 . JMHO . Cliff

hello

man this web site is drive'n me crazy. i have not been able to get on for 4 days.

Well I wouldn't really mind rebuilding the 4+3, but i will have to find out who does them, and what it will cost. Or if i could buy the parts to rebuild the overdrive unit myself. It costs about a grand for a rebuilt Odrive unit. I looked on ebay, didn't find any used ones.

As for the 6 speed, i wouldn't really mind cutting a hole in the floor. I'm just worried about the cross member, and altering the driveshaft. I can weld steel, but i'm not sure how well i can do performance parts, like a driveshaft.

ok here is another thing......

The day my O drive unit started to poop out on me: I changed the fluid, it was pretty black looking. so i figure it was burning. I refilled it and tooker for a ride. Still does not work right. Here is what happens..... shift into 4th then click my O switch (i relocated it to the consol) I have to click it quite a few times before the O drive light will come on. Then the car will kick into O drive, but when i step on the gas (even the slightest bit) it will just slip and revv up, unless i really get on it, then the car will take off. does this sound like regular O drive failure?

.....

I JUST E-MAILED BOTH OF THOSE SITES. SEE IF THEY HAVE THE REBUILD KITS.

THANX

I ALSO JUST FOUND A SITE CALLED 5SPEEDS.COM THEY HAVE THE KIT
BUT THERE ARE 2 DIFFERENT KITS, A soft KIT, AND A hard KIT. THE HARD KIT HAS GEARS AND BEARINGS, AND THE SOFT KIT HAS CLUTCHES AND SEALS. $95.00 FOR THE SOFT KIT, NO PRICE ON THE HARD KIT. SO I E-MAILED THEM AS WELL. SEE WHAT THEY SAY

hmmm

Well i just got feedback from all the sites. no one has the Hard kit with the gears and bearings. everyone has the soft kit with the clutches, seals and so on. wonder if i could just buy the soft kit and hope that just my clutches and seals are bad. Hopefully the gears are ok.

I'm just mainly concerned about the bearings :(

........

well i found all the parts i need to rebuild the Overdrive.

funny thing though, i just looked in the Ecklers catelog, and it says they have the richmond 6 speed... and it says that it comes with everything needed to instal. And it is even called an 84-88 richmond. You would think that i'd be a direct fit. But according to richmond site, and the picture that was posted on the previous page.. it requires some real doin.. ;shrug

"Nothing worthwhile in life is ever easy" Good luck....I am blessed that my 4+3 still is going strong. Just gotta take care of it ....I thought about the conversion to a auto or 6 speed before too, but the costs and labor for a newbie like myself would not be worth it. I will just take care of the one I have and I am grateful that I am a Corvette owner. Picking her up from the paint shop tommorow!!!!!
