Sorry for the delay, I have had lots of distractions.
Here is the procedure I used to set the valves and, as I said, it made a big difference.
Run the engine for about 15 minutes, to approximately the operating temp.
Bring the crankshaft to # 1 firing position and align the timing mark to “0”.
To insure you are at # 1 firing position you can remove the spark plug and feel for compression, check the distributor alignment with # 1 plug, or I was able to look at and feel the rockers as they both closed to prepare for the firing cycle.
Be sure to let the engine set for about 5 minutes before removing the valve covers, this will allow the oil to drain.
Adjust exhaust to .030” and intake to .024”
When in position adjust:
Exhaust – 1, 3, 4, & 8
Intake – 1, 2, 5, & 7
Then rotate the crankshaft 1 full turn, (360 deg.) and set the timing mark to “0”
When in position adjust:
Exhaust – 2, 5, 6, & 7
Intake – 3, 4, 6, & 8
This whole process took me about 1.5 hours and I have never done it before. I avoided doing this thinking I would have problems and it turned out to be very easy.
Good luck,
Dean
