flywheel puller?

/JON ... I'm going to buy a fly wheel puller tomorrow

JON:
Flywheel puller ... what's that? Or do ya mean balancer/damper puller (they loan those for free at my local Autozone)?

BTW, was your flexplate OK? Was it cracked?

Did you determine source of noise? ... was it a bolt hitting or something else?

Did you have tranny case welded ... or ..?

Jack-

They do make a specialty tool called a flywheel puller... it's kind of like an oil filter wrench, but it hooks onto so many flexplate teeth. I saw one in a Jeg's catalogue, but I found out yesterday that they don't carry them at Autozone. I ended up running a long screwdriver through one of the small holes in the flexplate and having it catch on the engine block on the starter side. I checked to make sure I wasn't deforming any metal over there, and it only worked with an 18" breaker bar and uses all my strength.
The flexplate wasn't cracked, but it was out of true, as I suspected... I can tell that easy enough by stepping on one side of it while it's laying on flat ground. There was a shaved bolt that was hitting everything.. I'm pretty sure that was causing the noise. It was most likely hitting because the flexplate was so messed up.
I already had the think JB welded before I got any responses from you guys. The tranny is mounted back on the block and mounted to the crossmember again. I torqued the bolt on the broken flange down as hard as I could, and nothing has given yet. Of course, the engine or the tranny hasn't been worked yet. The crack is in a place I can visually inspect it from time to time when the hood's up. I don't think that there is a chance for further case failure as the other five bolts will hold it flush and if it cracks again... the 6th bolt will hold the broken flange. I dunno though. If worst comes to worst... I'll just have to put in a 6 speed. I'll post again when I get it running. Thanks.

Oh ...OK ... I thought you meant some tool to remove the flywheel/flexplate. I know the tool you're referring to ... it's more of a wrench to help you rotate the flexplate-crank ... right?

Yes sir... I guess I wasn't very specific... that's what happens when you're an expert on a subject. :L Haha, I had no idea that one even existed until a few days ago when I began my search because I took a Massive chunk of skin off right above my middle knuckle on my middle finger. I've been to three different auto parts places this afternoon and one hardware store... and I've finally got EVERYTHING I need to finish. I don't have class till 11:30 tomorrow morning, so if you'll excuse me I'm going to be on my back until I'm sitting in the cockpit of my beast, or I'll die first. Wish me luck.
