Welcome to the Corvette Forums at the Corvette Action Center!

sorry for another dumb question but........

It is well known that the guys from New Jersey measure their success by the size of the fire ball produced, the percent of 1st/2nd/3rd degree burns produced or the distance covered in the air when one inadvertantly uses one's body to complete a circuit of at least 15,000 volts.

Over here, we're three-for-three. :grouphug:

I would strongly advise you to get the BIGGEST pipe wrench you can find, the longest piece of pipe and TURN that puppy as hard as you can. We in New Jersey believe the rounded edges on a fixture are MUCH more attractive than all those sharp edges. In fact, they SHOULD have come from the factory that way.:eyerole

SUCCESS!!!!!!!
My neighbor happened to stop by to show me some improvements he has been working on on his '66 'vert and with his help we got that fitting off! YAY!!

Next I pulled the entire waterpump off and all the pulleys so it will be easier to clean up and paint the WP off the car and also I'll probably repaint the pulleys too to give them a fresher look.

It pays to be careful, but it also pays to be stubborn and persistent and not let something beat you. :)

DAMN! The fitting is off huh?

And we (noo-joy-z), guys spent all day checking for the rising fireball to the south.

;)

Bob, I wouldn't bet on that either....... don't think it hasn't crossed my mind and tempted me more than a few times. I even jokingly mentioned it to my neighbor and he just smiled at me and said "we can do that". :D

it would make painting it a lot easier........... not to mention reassembly especially those PIA french locks and all the shielding. How nice would it be to be able to reassemble everything working on the motor on a stand and not leaning over the fenders. D*mn, yanking that motor really is tempting!
hmmmm, wonder just how difficult it really would be?? :D

amazing isn't it? why do all my threads turn into endless page ones? and all of it because of one stupid fitting!

sorry all, none of them there type parties at my place - the hot tub is broken! ;LOL ;LOL

Heat around its base. Got a small propane torch?

Take the pump off (and away from the fuel line) and place it in a large bench vice.

THIS IS THE "ONLY" WAY to attack the problem. Bench vice........HEAT......and use a pipe extension over a big open end wrench.

nope. we managed it without heat, without a pipe, and with the WP still on the car. I pushed from one end on the wrench and my neighbor had my biggest screwdriver, a pretty big one actually, inside the nipple end of the fitting and pushed from his end. With the two of us pushing it together we were finally able to break it loose and get it to turn. It still took both of us working together on it until the last 1/4 turn of the threads before it would loosen up and turn easier than it came right out.
Tomorrow i'll go to Sears and pick up a thread chaser kit so I can clean up the threads from all the open boltholes from all the various parts i've removed off the motor. I figure I've gone this far so I might as do this job the right way.

You know the one about the " better late then never " thing. ! Had I known that the fitting was to be replaced, rather then re-plated, I could have explained to you the easiest way to remove it by yourself. One small tape with a hammer, would have broken the barb off, then a deep socket on an impact wrench, or even a strong arm, would have gotten it off in a minute. Maby next time

Bob, if you are telling me that nipple on the side would have broken off easy enough and I could have gotten a socket on there I'm NOT going to be a happy camper. I KNOW having a socket and my large ratchet would have gotten that fitting off in no time on the first try.
SHEESH!!!!
go figure.

Barry, You want to test my option, put it in a vise right now and give it a good wack. Nothing like seeing the proof yourself. ;LOL

Bob, I believe you, just surely wish you came up with that idea to me a few days ago......... :D

Actually I put the piece into one of the boxes I've started Marked ""65 Vette Parts" that I'll keep stored down in the basement. I was going to just toss that fitting into the trash until my neighbor advised me to hang onto it. As he put it to me, "it may be trash to you now, but you never know what part you may need at some point later on for an emergency". So i'll keep it in the box and probably end up throwing it out in another 20-30 years. :)
