spacers/adapters. Do they effect performance?

I have been looking at different wheels for my 87 and am thinking about going with a wheel that requires an adapter. My real concern is if it effects performance/handling. Would it create more stress on the wheel? or will my handling of the vehicle be effected? I just want to be sure that I am not going to be creating problems for myself in the longrun.
I appreciate the input from anyone.

I had the spacers on mine when I got the car and could never get the wheels to balance, I then bought a set of adapters and everything smoothed right out.

There were some other issues that may have affected balance, the bolts were replaced with longer ones and were welded in place (very sloppy), so I replaced the bearings at the same time.

Go for the adapters they are more expensive but well worth it, check ebay and the forums for someone selling.

Best of luck

yeah don't do spacers!! but there are a few adapters out there. i have 17 inch rims from a 89 vette on my 86 which had 16's. it had no adapters and i was getting some rubbing at time when takeing tight turns. but the biggest thing the rims set to far in the fender wells. i have since put 1/2 adapters on the front and looking for some 3/4 for the back. i am more looking for the cnetric style ones.

are these what I am looking for?
