I'm restoring my spare tire carrier and have a question about proper installation. I've looked at assembly diagrams in a few catalogs and they are not the same. One diagram shows a nut between the bolt and v bracket but, I don't think that is correct. My best guess, from the bottom up would be - bolt, lock nut, v bracket, frame and nut? Second guess would be bolt, v bracket, lock nut, frame and nut. Help is appreciated. Thanks.

Order the assembly instruction manual (AIM) for your model year. The AIM shows how the cars were put together on the assembly line. Catalogue diagrams are sometimes helpful, but can be more generic than model year specific. AIMs are model year specific.

You will find the AIM to be helpful for lots of things.

mkapp, that helps, thanks. The order in your picture (bolt, v bracket, nut, lock washer, weld nut) would seem correct to me. The assembly manual that I have on a disc from Corvette America shows a different order. It shows the order as bolt, nut, v bracket, lock washer and weld nut. Having a lock washer between the top of the v bracket and the weld nut doesn't seem right to me. Perhaps the assembly manual is not correct or was changed from the copy on disc that I have. At present I only have the weld nut and no other nut above or below the v bracket. I'm a real novice and just trying to get it right.

I would trust the AIM. What model year? 77? I think I have the 77 AIM hard copy, but won't be able to check it until this evening.

If you look at the "bolt" there's no way to have the nut anywhere but at the top end. Bolt's not threaded all the way.
It's just you need to put the nut on the bolt AFTER you put the bolt through the carrier. The nut won't fit through the hole.
That's what you're seeing in the AIM.

mkapp, thanks again. Your picture is correct. After looking at the assembly manual diagram (for some time), the order is the same as in you pix. The drawing of the hole in the v bracket is not that clear in the disc version of the assembly manual which led to my confusion. I should add that I'm feeling dumb.
