Spark Plug wires...how bad to change them?

I read about threads of C3 fires and a big factor, I think, is the spark plug wires. So I was outside yesterday and I was looking at her and the path of the spark plugs. If I'm correct, the wires for a SB 350 go under the exaust manifold? Correct?

If so I guess that would make changing the wires a really big job, wouldn't it?

Thanks!! :)

Fires are generally caused by deteriorated or "Bubba-ized" fuel systems between the fuel pump and the carburetor, which let go and leak raw fuel on the hot engine = fire. I wouldn't worry about plug wires as a fire issue - they aren't.

Yup, they go below the exhaust manifolds and up to the spark plugs, with numerous clips and guides to route them through to keep them away from the hot manifolds. Installing a new set of wires isn't difficult - just tedious if you do it correctly and duplicate the factory routing and clipping (which is the only way to do it).

Thanks for the reply, John! How do you make sure that you carb isn't in this condition?

Just one more thing :o)

Just do one wire at a time. Pull one wire cut to the same length as the original if it fit right and then replace that one wire and go to the next. If you are going to pull them all off make sure you mark where no1 plug wire is on the cap. 18436572 is the firing order. :)

If your original steel line from the fuel pump to the carburetor is in place and your carb doesn't show any obvious fuel leakage, you're good to go; the ones that are scary have had that steel fuel line cut and have stuff spliced into it with rubber hoses and clamps.
