not much of an audio guy either........ speakers have no watts. They do have a power handling ability but most speaker ratings are listed for peak power handling, not continious so those specs are useless also.
I'm not really picking on your son as much as I am most of the general public who always seem to ask "how many watts are those speakers?
Sorry, I was in the audio industry too long in the past and it's a pet peeve of mine still.
but you are correct, most people just don't get it. I'm a big audio guy and I'm the first one to want and appreciate a great sounding audio system but in these old cars, especially if you have sidepipes, than there really isn't much of a point to it. Maybe something basic, but most anything else would be a waste. My '65 still has the factory radio and center speaker only and the radio barely gets 2 stations most of the time (it needs to go out for repair). I'm in no rush - I prefer the sound of the sidepipes
