I'm putting a richmond 6-speed in my '86, and it requires a new speed sensor with a gear for the 3.07 ratio. How in the world do I put this gear on the speed sensor? Does the whole plastic gear and metal shaft come out?

I've attached a picture of the two.

thanks.

BTW, if I'm documenting my experience in putting this in at

I haven't performed the work myself, but I believe that is the case.

I like your web site. :upthumbs

I also noticed you mentioned the Long shifter and its relatively short throws, and say that you hope you can drive the thing. I have a ROD 6-speed in mine too, and I have always prided myself in my ability to powershift a 4-speed as good as anybody, including "Mr. Four Speed" himself, the great Ronnie Sox. :cool

Well, the Long shifter takes some getting used to. The 3-4 gate is a natural, that is, it falls right into the gate if you do not apply too much pressure. However, if you use even the slightest amount of excess pressure pushing when banging 3rd gear, you'll miss the gate and bang 5th instead. Not good when you're trying to go fast... quickly - as in a 1/4 mile. By the same token, you can miss 4th on a downshift and go straight to 2nd if you're not careful. I actually power-shifted from 3rd gear right back into 2nd once at LACR. :o

It is a solid, well-built shifter; it just takes some getting used to for an old 4-speed guy. Good luck on the project.

Get the shaft

Not enough there to even guess at it, but it looks like the gear may detach from the shaft and put that on the speed sensor's shaft.

What was on the sensor when you removed it??

I am not positive, but I think you have two different objects there. One is a speedo sensor that gets information from the speedometer and gives it to the ECM. And the other is the speedometer gear. You should be able to just undo the bolt slip the old shaft and gear out and replace with the new one.

The speed sensor did not come with a gear. I was able to pull the gear off the other shaft, (it takes some effort), and I slipped the gear onto the speed sensor. It doesn't quite click onto the new shaft and it can slip off quite easily, HOWEVER, once the gear is installed, it looks like the body of the trans will prevent it from coming off.

We'll see!
