Speedo cable question-C2

Should the speedo cable have gear oil dripping from it when you pull it out of the casing? (427/390 w/M-21) I thought there was a seal that was supposed to keep the oil from rising up into the cable. :confused

The early speedo gear sleeves didn't have any seal at all, and later ones had an internal lip seal; can't remember where the breakpoint was. The service parts still available from GM have the seal (the seal was never available separately, and won't work on the first-design sleeve without machining a recess for it).
