After my first few days in my '81 I realize that the stock speedo has to go to the shelf for something a bit more real world. I see catalog speedos (140 mph) are available and while that almost seems like overkill the other way, it looks like that's the way I'll go.

This Corvette is a "for Canadian sale" Corvette. That's another way of saying that the speedo and odo are KPH. Anyone have any idea what I'm in for in converting to the 140 mph speedo? Do I need to replace the cable? I'm assuming the new speedo/odo will carry the proper conversion gearing for mph...

Any ideas? help?

Thanks,

Kelly,

I just did this conversion last weekend :D It's a piece of cake.

I found another speedometer so I could take the original one out of Rare and box it up and put it away.

A little advise:
My old speedo unit had a bit of a shimmy at low speeds, not very noticable, but none the less it was there. Years ago I pulled the old cable through the firewall and put some graphite down the cable. Before installing the new Speedo we pulled the guts out of the old cable. It felt fine, so we greased it and re-installed it. The new 140 speedo was very irratic at low speeds :mad

I had a new cable just incase, so we put the new cable in and the new speedo is rock solid and NO BOUNCY, BOUNCY and looks marvolus ;)

I also purchased my speedo from John at RedLine gauges and clock..

Best wishes and good luck..

Hey Rare,

Thanks,

Didn't I read that you also changed out some dash bulbs while you had the dash open? I notice that my dash is somewhat dim and was curious what bulb(s) you replaced and if you have part numbers, etc. Will the same bulb(s) work in the console area too?

Oh, and tell me you got the check....

Kelly,

The pony express has been running slow lately here in CA.. It could be at the house as I type this.. DON'T worry about it ;)Edit: Kelly the Pony Express arrived today in Modesto ;) Thank you!!

As for the light bulbs:

:.. .. Since I had the tach and speedo out I went to Kragens and bought all new 5 watt bulbs (#2825). They sure don't give those away :eek and I'm not so sure they are really worth the extra $$$, but it is brighter than before, and noticebly brighter than the center cluster.
