I had 3.55 gears put into my rear end a while back and have never gotten around to changing out the speedo gear and at the same time I need to do the cable also (ahh yes the famous bouncing speedo) Where do I find the speedo gear at and how hard is it to replace? also while I'm talking about the speedo cable, how hard is it to replace that thing too?

Will greasing the cable end at the tranny (ez to get to) stop the bouncing?

it might but since a new cable seems to be only $10, I'd rather replace the cable and know I have a good one

what I'm mainly concered about is the speedo gear, bouncing or not, it's not accurate right now

I believe replacing the gear is EZ, it goes by color I think, different colors for each ratio.

yeah I've heard that too, but where do you get them from? I can't seem to find any at my local parts dealers (not that they even have a clue what I'm talking about, don't belive me? ask for a radiator cap for a 63 corvair)

A Chevy Dealer should have them or any transmission shop...you need the rear ratio and the wheel size and type of transmission. Number 49 is the speedo gear below...

Jon,

is it fairly easy to get to from under the car and does it use your standard tools or do I need something special?

oh yeah and I have 3.55 gears, a 4 speed and the stock 15x8 aluminum wheels with 255/60/15's on it, know of any sites that I can look up to see exactly what gear I need?

Yes..its pretty easy....call this guy...Jeff Kopp...he is a parts manager at a chevy dealership...and a Corvette nut...He'll tell you what you need and mail it out to you...can't cost that much. Just have that information I told you about when you call ...Good prices also.

We're talking about speedometer cable not tach ;)

I Have the same set up. 4spd-255's-3.55 gears on my 81. I had a grey one originaly and had to use yellow to correct the speedo. Doc Rebuild has them as do several other vendors of corvette stuff.
This is two steps up from original gear. I needed eight mph lower reading and this fixed her up.

Let us know how you fair.

Oh buy the way, the gear cost $8 and takes 5 min to install. Just remove the cable retainer at the tranny and pull the housing and the gear is removed by just pulling it out and sticking the replacement in.

hmmm, yellow, what tooth count is that?

Not trying to be a smartazz ... but could it be a white gear ... although yellowed from 20+ years of running in 250 degree fluid?

well it sounds like he got it from doc rebuild and they show 2 different yellow gears, a 24 tooth and a 41 tooth. One is right, the other is very wrong. I think it's 24 but I'm not sure.
