speedometer died

I was just driving the C-3 and the speedometer went to '0'. Every once in a while it jumps up and then drops again. Any ideas what's wrong or how to fix?

Probably a broken cable.

Sounds like 25 bucks into the money pit......
Mines bouncing and making weird noises......waiting for it to go to"0"........

If it is the cable, how do you know if it requires an upper/ lower cable or one piece?

It is an LT1 1971 with M20.

Dave- Should be a one piece cable for a 4-speed. Only automatics were two piece, I believe. I would make sure first that it is indeed the cable by disconnecting it at the tranny and try to spin it by hand or with a cordless drill and see what happens.

My speedometer & odometer both passed away... or so I thought. But now Im thinking maybe its just a cable adjustment.

Any suggestions on how to check if either the speedo/odometer assembly or the cable is bad???

dlrshort, make sure your odometer reset is not engaged, ie pull down on the reset cable. I am not sure if your car has cruise, so it shouldn`t be this. If you remove the speedo cable from the tranny end, attach a drill to the cable. Make a note of the mileage including the tenths. Run the drill in reverse for a minute or so and then recheck the mileage. It should have advanced a few tenths or so. Hopefully this will help you narrow down your search.
