Speedometer Gear

The speedo in my 4-spd. runs about 7 mph fast, and I have read in the Corvette Central catalog that substituting the gear that goes into the transmission with a gear with one more tooth will lower the reading by 5 mph. Sounds good to me, but the gears apparently are coded by years and by color as to number of teeth. Does anyone know what the color of the standard gear is for an '81 4 spd with the 2.72 to 1 rear? I swapped out the standard 85 mph speedo for the 165 about 84K miles ago (the 140 mph wasn't being made then), and the 165 was more accurate than the 85....THAT one was almost 10 mph too high! I drive this car essentially off the tach, but it would be nice to get the speedo within a couple of mph. I will call Corvette Central later and see what they say, but it's only a $10 part and looks pretty simple to put in.

Thanks,

did you ever fix?

I found this post when searching and am running into the same problem myself. I don't know what gears are in the rear end now and speedometer not even connected at this point.
