Today was the second day i drove with a so called broke speedometer , well i caught it moving upward very slighly as i was driving and i did notice mileage indictor was moving too, now it dead again, is there any common check spot that is know to go first? somebody mentioned where my crusie control cables are, what do they strip inside? i hope it's not behind the cluster , but by looking i can see all the allen heads screws, etc so it does not look bad , i'm just afraid about "unhooking" everthing behind it , any body with taking apart the cluster please responed,

Thanks Rick G.

:w Rick,

Those allen bolts are fake, they are molded and part of the cover... There are phillips screws that hold the speedo/tach bezel on. I've had good luck getting the cover off without having to drop the steering wheel. Some folks prefer to drop the steering wheel some don't.

The speedometer cable comes through the firewall through rubber plug and attach to the speedo head with a clip like action, it doesn't screw on it has a wedge type attachment.

If you are replacing the cable, be it from the cruise box or from the transmission, Tie a very strong String or small rope to the end of the cable under the dash, tape it to the old cable and as you pull the old cable out through the firewall the string/rope will come along with it. Attach the New Cable to the rope and pull it back through the firewall. You will probably have to remove the rubber plug before pulling the old cable out then I cut my old one from the outer ring down to the center hole. Then when the new cable was in place I greased up the rubber gromet and put it back in place.

For an old fart like me, it is easier for me to remove the driver seat, which gives a whole lot more room to work under the dash. The speedo/tach doesn't have to come all the way out to replace the speedo cable ...

I'll look later and see if I can find a blowup in my assembly manual..

Lots of fake allen head bolts on the secondary gauge cluster too. And don't let Rare81 fool you. He's not as old a "fart" as he claims to be. :D

Those allen bolts aren't fake! Only the allen bolts on the centercluster are fake. Indeed you remove the speedo/tach cluster with the phillips screws but when you want to change the speedo or the tach you need a allen 6.5 (metric) to get the cover out. I've recently changed my speedo with a 240km/h one :)

The first place you want to look for your cable is the transmission connection. The cable make a almost 90 degree angle right after the connection to the transmission so it wears very fast overthere. Mine was almost broken on that place. And it's easy to acces.
Second place would be behind the cluster if the cable isn't locked into the cluster with the clip. Then you indeed need to remove the steeringwheel etc etc. When you remove the cluster please lookout for the speedo and tach needles they snap very easy..

Groeten Peter.

After you have removed the phillips screws, the 6 screws holding the Speedo and the Tach are real Allen Screws. It's been a few years since I replace the speedo with the 140mph and installed a new cable. Thanks for jogging my old memory.

Good post, thanks for the insight! I too will have to replace my bad cable soon.
