Got this annoying squeek in the speedometer. Took the cable off the speedometer and the squeek appears to be at the end of the cable. Tried to put some graphite on, but still squeeks. It appears that there is a small gasket or something and when it turns it is rubbing. Should I spray silicone or WD 40 into it?? Comments.

I put wheel bearing grease on the tranny end and let it work it's way to the front. It took awhile but it's better now.

It's Not the $20, it's getting the cable in the back of the speedo...if grease works for nothing and takes 5 mins, I'll do that first...

Hey JB,

I had the same problem when I got Rare. I took the Speedo and Tach out and used graphite and it quieted (sp) down but still every so often would bounce and squeel for bit then quiet down.

This last year I went with the 140 mph Speedo and replaced the steel inside the cable with a new one. I bought a new complete cable from the local Chevrolet Dealers Parts Dept. and thought I would save some time by just replacing the guts... W R O N G ! !

I got another L81 buddy over from Manteca and we put the new complete cable in and it's been like new ever since.

It isn't to bad with two people. Before I pulled the old cable up from the transmission I taped the new one to the old one and pulled it in while pulling the old one out. I had the seat out and between MAKO81 and me it was just a bit of pushing and pulling and putting the speedo and tach unit back together... Oh and before I put it all back together I went down to kragens and bought some higher wattage bulbs #2825 which made a big difference in night driving ;)

Say to Brad for me and the Dawg ;)

I don't Know if an 81 is the same as my 75, but after removing a piece of duct below the speedo, the connection on the back of the speedo was very accessable. It was just a little spring like clip that I pushed on and the cable came off. The replacement had a plastic like male end for the speedo connection and a metal male end for the tranny.

im gonna pay attention to this....

i was gonna post this very subject...i noticed mine seemed to pick up a squeak at the end of last season...gotta fix that before it makews me crazy...its not real bad, but it does seem to do it most of the time.so im gonna try this stuff. thanks...

Thanks for the feedback folks. Like Brusso, I removed the duct and pushed the clip to remove the cable from the back of the speedo. I put graphite in the end and let it spin around for awhile, greased the tranny end with a grease gun adapter and it still squeeks. If I have to replace the cable, I might as well squirt some silicone in it and see what happens. I don't get to spend as much time on line anymore, but you folks on the forum are the "best". Always willing to help and great to hear from you.
Take care and stay tuned.
