Sport mirror removal?

I've got some sport mirrors on my '79 that I'm trying to remove and can't figure out how to get at the back nut. What is the best way to remove the glass or get it out of the way to remove the nuts? I'd like to just put the standard chrome mirrors on in their place.

Take off the interior cover of the door and related(pull handle,arm rest ect) if you feel under the door skin where the mirror is mounted,there should be a couple of small nuts,(not the users on the site!!!)
any way that should be where the mirror is mounted.(Iy wont be easy getting them out or the new ones back in)Good Luck

I have already gotten to the mirror but can't get at the nut to the rear of it. I wondered if there was a way to get the glass further out of the way or just remove each window? I don't want to crack the glass with a socket.

I did the same last weekend. The divers mirror got loose so I had to torque the torque bolts on the inside. What you can try (what I did) is loosen the window rails (front and back). Keep them from falling down and scratch your glass by connecting a wire to them. Now you can lower and push back the glass some more. For me it was just enough to get to the last nut but it was still very very tight! Good luck (something I don't wish to do twice btw!).

mirror removal

I recently had to reverse the gaskets on my sport mirrors as someone else installed them upside down. I got on this site and followed the directions. I did find the far back nut hard to get to. I removed the two window "fluffy" guides loosened a few of the top bolts which allowed the window and front door panel to move towards the car more. I then used a wedge to hold everything back to loosen the last nut and remove the mirrors. Actually pretty easy, just a few minutes to get them out. A little tricky to get the nuts back on. Note: dont drop them!
