What is the function of the spring that is around my front brake drum? I can't find anything on it in my books. :confused

Maybe a mechanical engineer will answer this ; but I had always heard the spring dampened vibrations when the drum swelled from heat. This was to stop hair line cracks in the casting.

Sounds good ; doesn't it?

I believe it was identified as an anti-squeal spring. I've got them also. Apparently it was supposed to dampen the vibration caused by the contact of the shoes and drums. I believe they were only installed on the front drums. Not necessary for proper operation of the brakes.

Thanks guys, I had no idea what they were. I was going to order all new brake hardware and was told you can't get drums with the groove for springs anymore, so I was concerned if there was a crucial function. Appreciate your help.

They were intended to dampen high-frequency vibration in the drums, which generated "squeaks" or "squeals"; they weren't very effective.

They sure weren't JohnZ, I guess when I install new drums I won't be able to tell the difference. Thanks.
