Stainless steel... How to remove fine scratches

has anyone ever tried using a sheet of masonite with holes drilled to hold the fender top or cove stainless while polishing/buffing with a hand held buffer

seems like it will help to keep things from flying around, bending or kinking

I attach mine down to a long piece of 1 1/2" angle iron before buffing them. The buffer will never grab the windsplits that way!
