HELLO ALL, i was just wondering who out there in corvette-land is running a stall converter in their car. i have a turbo 400 ,with a moderate cam, and i believe there isn't enough stall at idle. i have to run the engine at 1200rpm in neutral just to get my vette to idle at 750 in drive.even then, it feels like it's going to die out.
thanks , i appreciate any input

Robin- I am using a TCI with an advertised stall of 2k. I dont have much of a cam ( XE-262) I idle at 800 in neutral & it drops to about 650 in drive. I kind of wish that I had gone just a little more say about 2500. The converters in the 2k stall range are pretty cheap, I think mine was about $150 or so. Have you checked for vaccum leaks etc. That can also produce the sympoms that you describe. Good luck!

SCOOTER,thanks for the info.i too am thinking of a tci stall. i like the fact that your rpm's don't drop drastically. i've been all over my engine looking for leaks, but nada. i think the cam is just a little too much for stock converter.

thank you ,again

Robin : I don't know what your cam specs are, but you may want to go in the 2400 range instead of the 2k. Like i say i wish that I had gone with a little more, but then agian I did'nt want it too slippery at cruise rpm. Maybe someone else might have some suggetions. Also if I am correct( not 100% sure on this) most th400's have the large 13" converters which are even tighter than the 12" th350 converters.

Get The Specs On The Cam And Get A Recommendation From The Manufacturers As To Wich Stall, also If Yo Are Running A Holley , The Power Valve May Have To Be Redone To Match .

Oops, Give Holley The Info And They Will Tell You Wich Power Valve You Need For Your Carb.

Robin,

The stall converter is a good idea. I also suggest you consider a converter lock-up type converter and kit. I believe its available for the TH400. The lock-up feature will hydraulically push the converter shaft into locking splines and prevent converter shake-up, and it will also improve gas milage on the third gear over non-lock-up converters.

HELLO, Gerry do you happen to know who manufactures the lock-up stall converter?

thanks

BUBBA and his sidepipe band

Robin,

This website offers a TH-400 w/ Lock-up. Maybe they offer a kit. Give them a call to find out what you need to do to your TH-400: http://www.converter.cc/4L70_conversion_kit.htm

Also ask them about a "switch pitch" converter. The switch pitch feature allows for selection of either of two stalls speeds with the use of the switch.

If your tranny is the original one that came with your car, then you should consider obtaining another TH-400 for experimentation and abuse, so that nothing trajic may happen to your numbers-matching transmission.
