Sorry, had to start topic like this again. Don't sing.
Finally going to put starter in tomorrow, i was hoping to start
car up, & drive it up on ramps to get ready 4 it.
Very slow to crank & starter makes all kinds of growning noise
and clicks & grinds.(thats why i'm replacing starter, right!?)
One thing it does now is, clicks & makes a VERY fast tapping
noise, (like hitting a key on your computer keyboard quickly)
And the oil pressure guage needle flutters like crazy, while
cranking, but it wont crank!
I know a new starter will cure this, but it really drives me crazy!

Any thought's about this so i can sleep tonight?

THANKS ALOT! gary.

check all of your battery connections do a voltage drop test at all the connections and load test the battery make sure you have enough amps this will also cause the condition you are having good luck steve:hb :_rock :w

One thing more and more people are doing is installing a remote starter soleniod which is where the problem is 90% of the time. If you want directions on how to I can give you the web site.

How long was the car sitting?

You might have got bitten by the slow drain monster... charge it..... your batt might be dying/dead!

The Click ( and other noises ) are from the batt ( or other electrical bad connections ) not allowing FULL current to get to the starter.

The click is the Solenoid pulling in.. the starter starting to draw current and not enough voltage to keep the solenoid engaged....

Then the batt recovers and the cycle starts again

Click... grrrr.clik grr click..clk nuttin~

Vig!

The Vigster nailed it. One more thing, don't tease it too long with a weak charge or you'll be buying a new alternator and maybe more when you burn it up (comonly called GM alternator death) like I did shortly after buying my Vette. If that ever happens to you, you'll never do it again cause all that white smoke and the smell of burning electrical hoozits will scare the buhgeezus out of you.

Definately have that battery checked!

Ya know I've actually kinda become used to that smell. Scary! :L

Thank's everyone!
As soon as i get my new starter in, i'm getting all the wiring
checked out.

Ron, what is that site for a remote solenoid? sounds like
something i'm interested in! thank's.

From what you describe it may not be the starter at all. Have your battery tested to see if it has a failing cell. If the battery is ok,check/clean and re-torque all your batter connections and starter connection. What you describe is text book low voltage/amperage (failing battery or bad/dirty connections)

starter is now starting

Just put in a new starter, cleaned every contact i could find.
Started right up! man, did it sound good!
the old starter was really bad!!, i could pull the pinion out &
turn the gear with no effort at all.

Just thought you'd be interested.

Ron, thank's for the site! did'nt look at it yet, but will right now!
:cool :s :J :beer
