Start-up knocking

Would really appreciate some ideas about this.

Every morning when I crank my '99 C-5, everything sounds great, until I put it in gear. At that point it starts knocking like it has bad lifters. The knocking is in time with the engine revs and gets louder for about a half-mile. Then most of it goes away. The dealer has replaced the idler pulley, alternator pulley, and serpentine belt without making a difference. The dealer stated it might be carbon build-up on the pistons, but GM wouldn't cover that situation under warranty.

Thanks for the ;help.

Ken, thanks for the insight on the other threads. Carbon build-up is exactly what the dealer claims as the problem. This site has better information than any other I've seen. Keep up the good work.
