Hi guys, What is the easiest way to replace the starter on a 1987? I am pretty sure it has a broken tooth or something else drastically wrong...It turns over pretty slowly, and sometimes will just notturn over at all. (new Battery). It looks like ahuge PITA to take out and install....any good ideas or hints would be greatly appreciated.

Its pretty easy...loosen the brackets for the transmission lines so you can nudge them out of the way when you drop the starter. Loosen the nut on the on the starter for the bracket on the starter, remove the two wires on the solenoid (one large and one small nut) drop the two large bolts holding the starter up. Then wiggle it out by lifting the starter off the bracket and wiggling it out.

Thanks John,
I half heartedly attempted this before, and it didn't seem too easy....I had a rough time reaching the wires to disconnect them...Did you have to remove the Header, it seems that the pipe is in the way....Thanks

I don't have headers and have not taken a starter out with them before. A possible trick you may want to use is to unbolt everything on the starter...then dismount the starter from the bracket and the bell housing...tilt the engagement part of the starter upward, then disconnect the wires.

Thanks for the input. I tackled it yesterday and actually got it out leaving most things in place.....Took it to Autozone, and the solenoid was bad. Purchased a new starter, put it in and I am set to go....Thanks for the help.
