When I turn the key I get a loud banging and the engine turns over very slowly. The battery is good so I'm thinking I have something sticking in the starter. Any suggestions?

I just replaced my starter as well. Starters have always given me pain.

First check that the rear support on the starter is attached (with the heat sheild) also check that the starter is bolted up flush with the block.

The problem you're having is that the starter gear is too close to the flywheel. That's why it bangs and then turns over slowly.

You should have a calibration tool that you can stick between the shaft and the flywheel gear teeth. It measures proper clearance. If not disconnect the batter and push the gear from the starter into the engaged position and measure the clearance between gears with a paperclip. If it doen'st fit you have to shim the starter to get the right distance.

Some would say a good starter doesn't need shims. You could exchange the starter for another one and see if that works if you don't like shims. Overall starter are just painful to replace in my opinion.

Good luck,
