Hi, I was just wondering what needs to be connected in order to start a motor "outisde" of the car. I say outside but its still mounted on the frame, just nothings connected. May question is do I need to rig up the rad? Will I have enough time to set the timing? Would I have a couple of minutes?

Thanks
Mike

With no water, NO more than 3 minutes from stone cold start. It may be safe to exceed that but I wouldn't want to chance it simply to save a coupla hours of rad & wp install time. It's very easy to lose time perspective when firing a new motor ... there'll be so many things to look at & lotsa noises/sounds you'll want to take time to investigate. 3 mins max, then let cool completely before adding any water/coolant. If you've also got a brand new flat tappet cam that'll require breaking in ... then DISREGARD the 3 min tip ... you'll need to keep the car running for 20-30 mins at mid-rpms ... so you'll need a working cooling system. And if you use straight water to run it in ... and if outside temps hard freeze afterward ... do remember that's only water left in the block.

Agree with first reply and I may add, NO THERMOSTAT for the break in....even had one stick closed, even brand NEW on cam breakin??? I have....talk about PIA>...

Mike,

If timing is all you want to initially set, then just remove the distributor, find a timing tape for the correct diameter of dampener (they sell kits at all speed shops and Auto Zone), find TDC and set the wheel damper with the tape approximately 12 deg. on the timing chain marker, and then re-insert the distributor with the rotor pointing at the #1 electrode on the rotor cap. ..voila...you're there.

I have tried this and it works every time..... I also use this method to win bets on new motors..
