I'm trying to start my 86 L98 but when I turn the key radio lights up with dash and everything like normal . When I turn it all the way to start nothing happens no crank or anything the radio time just turns off and the Anti-lock light turns on .
I've already taken the starter off and it passed the test at autozone full pop out . Any ideas??
1. Does the solenoid get the signal to engage?
2. Is the positive cable to the starter in good shape.
3. Are you sure Autozone is correct?
There is a cable and a wire to the starter. When you crank, it should send a signal to the solenoid to engage and spin.
I think you might need to do an amp draw to see if the cable is working as it should. You can cut all the strands of cable and it will still pass the continuity and ohm tests but fail when it has to run a large load.
I had sent my starter out for testing. Both times were good but the guy who took it apart showed me why it didn't work. One had oil that messed things up, the other I don't remember.. After rebuilding, it worked great,
